Commute with our CEO Episode 11: How did PAC and CloudVO start?

Episode 11 of “Commute with our CEO” video series is now live! Laurent explains how Pacific Workplaces and CloudVO started.

It started when Laurent worked for a large Silicon Valley company last century. He realized the workspace that they provided to the thousands of employees was just not adequate. That is what led him to co-found Pacific Workplaces in 2003. The company was created to provide professional space, meeting space, collaborative space; a space for people to cowork and build a work community. However, he also wanted to provide members with access to workspace on-demand wherever they were, which is what led the team to start CloudVO in 2009, providing on-demand workspace and virtual office space. Today, CloudVO offers on-demand workspaces and virtual office spaces at over 600 locations worldwide.

Join the CloudTouchdown Football Pool and Help The Harvey Relief Effort

It’s that time of year again! Join the CloudTouchdown Football pool. Invest $25 and 5 minutes of your time to set yourself up in the pool and compete against Coworking operators and members all season long.

Last year we distributed thousands of dollars of cash prizes, donated hundreds of dollars to the Boys & Girls Club of America, and had a lot of fun in the process. This year CloudVO will also match the pool donation to the Boys & Girls Club with a donation to the Red Cross to benefit the Harvey Relief Effort. This Harvey donation will not be taken out of the pool but contributed directly by CloudVO, which means that 90% of the money raised will be distributed to the weekly and season-wide winners, like in past years.

CloudVO annual football for partners and members

Interested in joining the fun this year? All teams must be registered by the NFL season kick off on Thursday, September 7th, 2017.

This year we will be using RunYourPool.com – a new website that we think has a better interface. If you have a log-in from last year, you will have to create a new username and password since this is a different interface.

This website allows us to set our own pool options and enter our own weekly picks. Each week, after picks have been entered, RunYourPool generates a spreadsheet with all the picks of our pool. As the games are played the spreadsheet is automatically updated reflecting points earned for each winning game. Points are totaled each week and tracked for the season for all the players of our pool.

  1. Follow registration instructions at:
    http://www.runyourpool.com/join/pool
  2. To become a Player in our pool you must first create a team/userID using the link above, then email your name and contact info to CloudTouchdownCommish@gmail.com to confirm that you have registered as a player, and so we know where to send the prizes!

4. Click “Submit Picks”
5. Repeat Steps above to make you Picks each week.

I am in a rush this week, how do I let the system do it for it for me?

  1. Do nothing and the system will assign points based on the favorite of each game.
  2. Or, if you want, you can make your picks in advance, all the way throughout the season!

Commute with our CEO Episode 10: Ubiquitous Work and Car as a Workplace

Our tenth episode of “Commute with our CEO” video series is now live! Laurent shares his perspective on working from your car – part of the ubiquitous work concept that CloudVO was built upon. For example, several business professionals, freelancers, mobile workers, etc. spend a lot of time on the phone. What is really exciting to Laurent is the self-driving car and how they are becoming a part of our everyday lives much faster than we anticipate. Laurent sheds light on the gain of productivity – drafting and sending emails or creating a presentation – basically, we will be facing our laptops while we drive. When compared to the amount the work we avoid right now during our commute, this is a great gain in productivity. The way we use our cars will be redesigned and we will be able to conduct meetings facing each other with four or five people in a car going to a client site. Laurent wraps up the idea that started this company – the workplace was going to be ubiquitous – and that includes a Car-as-a-Workplace.

Commute with our CEO Episode 9: Your Non-Compete Provision might be worth $1 million – Continued.

Episode 9 is now live! This is a follow-up to our last episode of the Commute with our CEO video series, where we learned why a non-compete provision is important to include in your master leases. In this episode, Laurent explains a situation where a landlord would pay off another operator to move into the same building. This is why that non-compete provision (in your master lease) becomes extremely valuable!

The Social Impact of Coworking

This past weekend, the who’s who in the Coworking Industry gathered in New York City for the annual Global Coworking Unconference Conference (GCUC). The event started on Friday with a slew of incredible speakers who covered topics emphasizing community, social impact, and growth. Saturday, attendees participated in the ‘Unconference’ component where topics and questions were posted and voted for, creating the discussion sessions for the day. Besides catching up with old friends and meeting new industry partners, we also learned a few things worth sharing.

image of entrance at gcuc 2017_social impact of coworking

Did you know that 1 in 4 millennials feel isolated? That’s right, according to Casper ter Kuile and Angie Thurston from Harvard Divinity School, a quarter of millennials do not have day to day peer support, or often nearby family, which means the sustained communities associated with coworking is a new century need.  Coworking communities often provide ‘pastoral-like’ services to their members, serving as much more than just workspace, they offer a strong sense of belonging.

Amrit Dhir, Global Operations for Google For Entrepreneurs, shared a few lessons Google has learned from building Google Hubs  for entrepreneurs worldwide.  He offered takeaways, here are some of our favorites:

  • Don’t just welcome diversity, demand it.
  • Be uncompromising with your culture. Only 95% of what is said sticks, so it is important to remind members of your culture. It’s what draws people to your space and why they stay.
  • Be flexible with your community.
  • People need the connections, but allow time and space for quiet too.

image of gcuc 2017_social impact of coworkingDuring the unconference portion, we heard from various owners and community managers who all touched on one common theme,  Social Impact. As coworkers, how are we bringing positive change into our community, and, how are we passing those affirmations into our homes, families, friends, school, etc?. Millennials care about social change and community contribution. We also learned about AllGoodWork and the (good) work they are doing by working with workspace providers to support local nonprofit organizations by providing free workspace.  With “doing good” as the primary topic, we walked away working on a plan to improve tactics altogether.

CloudVO is committed to serving our partners in their ‘good works.” Since we are each other’s best resource, we’d love to hear from you on how you are creating change within your community? Has your community taken on a particular social challenge? Do you have a story about the impact your community has had on a member in need? Please share with us your stories and we will be sure to share.  Even small projects can have profound impact, we’d like to rejoice in the social impact this wonderful Social Impact that coworking communities bring to the world.

In this latest episode of our Commute with our CEO video series, Laurent discusses why a non-compete provision in your master lease can be extremely valuable, even when the landlord may reject such a provision, to begin with. Commute with our CEO Episode 7: More on DeskMag Survey

Episode 7 is a follow up on Laurent’s previous takeaways on the DeskMag Survey on Coworking. This latest video in our Commute with our CEO series touches on some interesting data, such social media is the number one tool to attract new members. 34% of new members found their coworking space via word-of-mouth/social media, which makes social media much more effective than internet searches.
